SmartWorlds: APD/P3 Infrastructure- Part 2

DEVELOPING SHOVEL-READY
P3s & SUCCESSFUL DELIVERY

STREAM BEGINS THURSDAY, MAY 5 6PM CST

Collaboration is the key to success on multi-stakeholder projects such as public-private partnerships (P3s). In this second of a three-part series on alternative project delivery (APD) and P3s, industry experts share insights on forging the connections so vital to implementing alternative methods of upgrading our nation’s neglected infrastructure. The challenges are clear. Now is the time to take action and meet them head on!

In this second conversation, our expert panelists will discuss projects – both near and far - to illustrate successful methods of developing and packaging P3s. Discussion points will include project types appropriate to the delivery method, the steps required to fund P3s, and the optimal structures to deliver them.

Investors, designers and builders are eager to see more shovelready projects. States and cities need vital infrastructure projects to move forward, and the U.S. needs to course correct before the condition of its roads, bridges, railways and airports lag those of other nations. Together we can do this!

The Realities of 3D Printing

Missed out on seats? Stream it live:

Wednesday March, 30th 6:15 pm CST.

What are the The Realities of 3D Printing in the Built Environment? Having earned 2.75 billion dollars in 2015 alone, 3D Printing has plenty of hype surrounding it. That hype may be justified, but is it realistic? Even viable? How does this impact one of the most important industries in our society? For the crucial answers to these questions, BuiltWorlds embraced the next generation members of our community. In a joint venture with Northwestern University’s Mechanical Engineering school, we have united for a crash course into how the current two main challenges facing 3D Printing in the built environment can be overcome: methodology and structural integrity.

On March 30, this team...our team will present the progress of their project first-hand at our headline event The Realities of 3D Printing! In a show-and-tell fashion, our team will demonstrate concerns as to whether 3D printed construction or additive manufacturing works on a smaller level. Along with a panel of industry experts, we’ll examine the endless spools of filament surrounding present and future uses for 3D printing and Additive Manufacturing.

The Realities of 3D Printing will go much further beyond printing out a tiny widget. You’ll be able to see the ebbs and flows of the scholastic journey to reach that next echelon of how 3D Printing impacts the built environment. Join us, a cadre of industry experts, and team BuiltWorldsNU on March 30th to see what can be achieved in our classroom well before it is applied in the field.

SmartWorlds: Future Water

REGISTER BELOW

Flint, Michigan...

Those two simple words now bring our planet's most vital issue into stark relief. But there is much more to the broader drama than just rusty pipes. From lead-poisoned municipal water systems across the U.S. to California's longstanding drought and even the annual algal blooms on Lake Erie, the daily headlines and mounting data all point to a worsening crisis in both the quality and quantity of Earth's most precious natural resource.

But the world's water woes are much more than just an American problem. On the contrary, the United Nations estimates that nearly 800 million people currently have no access to clean drinking water. And more than 2.5 billion lack adequate sanitation. So the challenges are many, but so too are the potential solutions. Inspiring efforts to reclaim, recycle and reuse water are now under way, aiming to re-purpose greywater irrigation, to optimize stormwater management using big data and green infrastructure, and even to revive the resource via revamped wastewater treatment plants.

Yes, "from toilet to tap" is one urgent answer now realistically on the table in California, driven by the Mother of Invention, herself, Necessity. Today, water-starved Los Angeles is even contemplating a $1-billion program to achieve once unthinkable levels of purification. But that is just one drop in the roiling sea of creativity now swirling around this dynamic global market. Your chance to dive in is here!

On March 10, SmartWorlds: Future Water is the next special event in our ongoing, multi-disciplinary series that seeks to spur innovation and to promote smart, sustainable thinking to inform future action. The evening will begin at 5:30 pm with a networking reception in our new SmartWorlds Gallery, followed by presentations, discussion and audience Q&A on stage in our new BuiltWorlds Studio. Join this compelling conversation about perhaps the greatest challenge confronting our species in the 21st Century. And as a special bonus, this will all take place in the bright and roomy event space at BuiltWorlds' splashy new home, 1260 W. Madison St. in Chicago's West Loop.

SmartWorlds: APD/P3 Infrastructure - Part 1

Eventbrite - SmartWorlds: APD/P3 Infrastructure - Part 1

One of America’s greatest strengths has been its world-class infrastructure. Today, however, much of this vast network of railroads, power grids, roads, highways, sewers and engineered waterways lies aging and crumbling, as a result of underinvestment and a lack of political will.  At the same time, new cities around the world are investing in more efficient and sustainable systems, leaving us increasingly to wonder whether and how America can begin rebuilding its own infrastructure in a way that will allow the country to retain a leading world position in the 21st century.

Given the financial pressures at all levels of government, the public-private partnership has emerged as a promising way to finance the effort to rebuild America. However, despite the success of the approach in other countries, public-private partnerships, or P3s as they are often called, have seen a slow and often faltering start in the United States. Fears of ceding public assets to private, often foreign companies, a general lack of understanding about how P3s work and America’s more complex legal and political frameworks have all contributed to this slow start. However, despite the challenges, the BuiltWorlds community keeps returning to the imperative that something must be done to enable America to move forward on projects that ultimately are vital if the nation does not want to find itself among the “less developed countries” of the century.

So tonight, we dig deep into the realities and misconceptions of alternative project delivery methods (APDs) and P3s. We’ll deeply examine previous cases in order to get better educated about the ingredients necessary to develop successful public-private partnerships. Our panel of thought-leaders will present case studies live in front of an educated and engaged audience that, through their questions and comments, will help to ensure that we have an insightful and honest conversation about how P3s work and their role in helping us reclaim America’s infrastructure.

The start of the Wikipedia definition of “Lean Construction” states that it is “a combination of operational research and practical development in design and construction with an adaption of lean manufacturing principles and practices to the end-to-end design and construction process.” True, but what lean is really all about is adding value, eliminating waste, and fostering mutual respect among team members. The question is how to get there.

Project Innovation Series: Heitman Architects - Method Manufacturing

For the next installment of our ongoing Project Innovation Series, meet the team behind Chicago's acclaimed Method Manufacturing facility, the project that has spawned a “clean industrial revolution” while achieving LEED Platinum Certification, a first for manufacturing. Method already has been celebrated as much for its role in the renewal of Chicago's historic Pullman neighborhood as for its many sustainable features, which include a 600-kw, 230-ft-tall wind turbine, rotating solar trees that track the sun, and the world's largest rooftop farm. Designer Heitman Architects, general contractor Summit Design + Build, urban agriculture pioneer Gotham Greens, and sustainability consultants KJWW Engineering all will be on hand to discuss the collaboration that launched an instant icon.
