Mickey Collins, AIA, LEED AP, Vice President - Senior Project Manager, HOK
John Ekholm, Senior Project Manager, University of Chicago
Helen Torres, S.E., LEED AP BD+C, Vice President, Thornton Tomasetti

Join the William Eckhardt Research Center project team to hear first-hand about the innovative techniques employed and key lessons learned during the course of designing, constructing, and managing this groundbreaking new research facility.

The William Eckhardt Research Center, designed by HOK, brings together the University of Chicago’s first molecular engineering program, and its Nobel Prize-winning physical sciences research groups into one space. The 277,000 sq. ft., $225-million research facility opened last September, features state-of-the-art laboratories, offices, conference rooms, and a 150-seat conference facility and café.

The center, which is seeking LEED Gold certification, was exceedingly complex, presenting its fair share of design opportunities and challenges. In addition to its numerous laboratories, offices, conference rooms, and below grade cleanroom, the center was designed to feature plenty of open spaces to foster collaboration. Additionally, the facilityrequired unique structural engineering expertise, designed by Thornton Tomasetti, due to the site conditions for the foundations and deep double basement.

Don’t miss this opportunity to hear how the William Eckhardt Research Center moved from design to construction, to operations and is now serving as the home for cutting-edge research at the University of Chicago.

RSVP Today!

Event is free to attend. Hor’dourves and beverages will be provided.

IIT Institute of Design Strategy Conference

Our goal for the 13th year of the IIT Institute of Design Strategy Conference is to build on insights from emerging trends and behaviors we observed in the four preceding Strategy World Tour events in San Francisco, Hong Kong, Mumbai and Detroit. We are bringing some of the drivers of change to the Conference. While the high level of speakers and conversation will be the same as before, the format has changed to enable everyone to contribute to the content. The speakers and additional strategists, thinkers, and business leaders will lead focused discussions and work sessions on how the changes we are facing impact specific industries or domains, and how we can apply strategic design-driven approaches to address them.

Provocateurs

During the first morning, provocateurs will challenge us by presenting ideas driving change. These will include the confluence of robotics and AI, the emergence of the maker movement, carrying out sustainable design while world’s middle class grows another billion people, the rise of innovation in China and India, and the trend to applying strategic design to social challenges.

Creators

In the afternoon of the first day, creators we will lead small groups in exploring how these provocations will impact industries, services, environments, information, and strategy. The application areas will include broad areas like health, learning, work, the future of food, social innovation, the changing nature of design services, and the role of innovation centers inside organizations. Brief share outs will take place on the second morning.

Integrators

During the last afternoon, integrators will transform wide-ranging ideas from the previous 36 hours into enlightened insights via on-stage discussions and debates. Integrators will describe early indicators of how design and strategy are changing.

Great Water Cities 2016: Rainfall to Results in Action

Great Water Cities 2016: Rainfall to Results in Action

Stormwater runoff is the largest growing source of water pollution across the United States. To help stormwater professionals apply best-in-class solutions to this growing problem, WEF launched the WEF Stormwater Institute in 2015. In late 2015, the Institute released a landmark report, Rainfall to Results: The Future of Stormwater, which was the first effort to identify priorities in the wake of significant rulemaking and resulting rapid changes in the industry.

Great Water Cities 2016: Rainfall to Results in Action will build upon the Rainfall to Results report and provide the catalyst for continued advancement in several key areas of managing stormwater runoff and valuing it as a resource. Both new and familiar themes will be addressed during the event, through the lens of the stormwater and wet weather sector. The summit will bring together thought leaders from various sectors who are impacted by and manage urban stormwater and water resources to exchange information and experience on the following areas:

  • Close the Funding Gap
  • Manage Assets and Resources
  • Work at the Watershed Scale
  • Support Innovation and Best Practices

In addition to plenary discussions, the summit will challenge participants to engage in small groups so that participants can come away with ideas and actionable solutions to successfully meet the challenge of managing and valuing stormwater runoff at the local level.
