When it comes to architecture, Public Interest Design (PID) takes a much more humanistic and participatory approach to the craft than most other methods. Once the latter portion of the 1990s arrived and green ideas of sustainability really started to blossom, PID moved to the front of the architectural vanguard.

Recently, architecture professor David Dewane, writing online for Design Intelligence, published four interviews with influential young leaders in the AEC community who are leading the charge for greater social impact design.

Dewane broke down PID into four categories: planning, movement, building, and product design scale. He gave one topic each to the following creative luminaries: Andrew Balster, director of Archeworks; Elaine Asal, senior associate, Gensler; Jeremy Knoll, project architect, BNIM; and Scott Key, CEO, Emergency Floor.
