Zaha Hadid Architects Out (Again) in Tokyo

Only three weeks after releasing its new video on the planned Tokyo Olympic Stadium, London-based Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) again is no longer in the game.

The firm had dropped out of the project in July when the Japanese government declared its design too expensive. But on Sept. 7, ZHA re-entered the competition teamed with 115-year-old Japanese AEP firm Nikken Sekkei. The marriage was short-lived. In a joint statement released Friday, the two firms said they had "not been able to secure a construction company in its consortium and, therefore, announce that they are unable to enter the competition."

Set to debut for the 2020 games, the stadium project has long been plagued by monetary and design issues. After ZHA dropped out in July, scaled-back settings were placed on the design competition for seating and budget. Though ZHA is now out again, the firm still hopes to contribute to the final product.
