Northwestern University's official school color is deep purple. But the Evanston IL home of the Wildcats may want to add gold to its branding now that its new Sailing Center has earned LEED Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Designed by Woodhouse Tinucci Architects and built by general contractor Power Construction, both based in Chicago, the 6,000-sq-ft structure was brought in on time and just under its $3-million budget. Still, the architects needed considerable forethought to design the building in such a way that future neighboring buildings will still be able to enjoy scenic Lake Michigan views of the beach and downtown skyline.

On the structure, itself, colorful plastic panels slide sideways and can be folded upward to open up to the beach launch area. During sailing season, they reveal a view of Chicago directly to the south across the lake. In the harsh winter, though, the building is easily buttoned up, piled high with stored boats and sailing gear. That efficiency is just another benefit of its now-golden sustainability.
