The idea of intelligent buildings is seductive.

Sensor enabled smart buildings that know when they need cleaning, heating or cooling. Buildings that harness rainwater, use less and recycle more. Resilient buildings that withstand disaster. Sustainable buildings made from only environmentally friendly materials. Digital-friendly buildings that support the way people want to live in 2017.

These features are incredible and promising, potentially improving the environment, the longevity of the building, and the lifestyle of the end user. The problem is, they’re incredibly hard to implement. The built industries are still figuring out how to make it all work.

Some burning questions remain:

How do we get all of these goals into one building? How much more expensive would that be, and how would we pay for it all? What do we do about objectives that seem to conflict? How do we get our codes and standards in line with these new features? How do we measure success? Who will measure success?

Join us as we spend a half day at UI LABS exploring the possibilities, what we truly want from our future buildings, and what more needs to be done to bring our goals closer to reality.

SPEAKERS

AGENDA

7:15 am – 8:00 am | Breakfast and Networking

8:00 am – 8:10 am | Opening Remarks
Matt Gray, Co-Founder, BuiltWorlds and Co-Chairman, Graycor

8:15 am – 9:00 am | Opening Keynote:
Designing & Fabricating The Next Generation Buildings
Neil Katz, Associate, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP

The opening keynote will  trace the history of what we have wanted out of our buildings and lay out the challenge of what we want now - resilience, sustainability, performance, efficiency, quality, and expression. Following this introduction to goals for the next generation of building, the speaker will frame the challenge of figuring out how we get all of this in something we can actually afford to build.

9:05 am – 9:50 am | Building Standards
Jessica Cooper, Executive Vice President, Delos Solutions & Director of Sustainability at Delos (WELL)

Jessica will introduce the concept of the WELL Building Standard as distinct from other building standard measurements such as LEED and discuss ways in which building standards are informed by data and drive particular aspects of the design process.  In doing so, she will consider the ways in which building standards impact broader urban communities as well as the lives of those who inhabit them.

9:55 am – 10:40 am | Performance Based Buildings: Energy, People, and Finance
David Leopold, Director, Program Management, City Digital

This panel will explore the ways in which UI Labs and City Digital are using Chicago as a test bed to improve the ways in which buildings are analyzed, built, and operated from the perspective of energy, users, and methods for financing construction and maintenance.  The panelists will do so through case studies developed during 2016 and 2017 that look at new ways of tracking energy services as well as the plethora of new data on how buildings are being used.  In particular, they will discuss the concrete value of the data that is gathered from buildings and of knowing how they function.

10:40 am – 11:00 am | Break

11:00 am – 11:45 am | New Building Materials
Moderator: Walker Thisted, Producer, BuiltWorlds

This panel will explore innovations in traditional building materials both in terms of how they are manufactured and how they contribute to the form and performance of the building from the perspective of energy consumption, user experience, and design.  In doing so, we will look at the research and development process that goes into new building materials, the ways in which they have been deployed on projects, and the new capacities they give to designers and owners.

11:50 pm – 12:35 pm | New Design and Construction Techniques
Moderator: Walker Thisted, Producer, BuiltWorlds

This conversation will focus on alternative ways of viewing the design and construction process.  In the case of Prescient, this has involved taking a product oriented approach that utilizes a proprietary software and framing system that vastly increases the speed with which a building is constructed.  In the case of Aditazz, this has involved looking at the design process from the perspective of how one might design a microchip and grow a building via a set of parameters that ultimately increase the efficiency of the layout of the building.

12:35 pm – 1:30 pm | Lunch

1:30 pm – 2:15 pm Resource, Building, and Energy Management
Moderator: Jason Blumberg, CEO & Managing Director, Energy Foundry

This panel will explore the ways in which new initiatives in the energy and building management sectors and being incubated, funded, and developed to better understand how we power and manage buildings and create a feedback loop for future buildings, renovation, and repositioning.  In doing so, the panelists will consider ways in which new energy sources and feedback impact the design and maintenance of buildings.

2:20 pm – 3:05 pm | New Building Products
Moderator: Walker Thisted, Producer, BuiltWorlds

This panel will explore innovations in building products both in terms of how they are manufactured and how they contribute to the form and performance of the building from the perspective of energy consumption, user experience, and design.  In doing so, we will look at the research and development process that goes into new building products, the ways in which they have been deployed on projects, and the new capacities they give to designers and owners.

3:05 pm – 4:00 pm | Coffee and Snacks
