San Francisco-based project management provider Aconex Ltd. is headed for the nation's capital. Government IT solutions provider Carahsoft Technology Corp., Reston VA, plans to market and sell the enterprise's cloud-based collaboration tools to public sector users through its General Services Administration (GSA) schedule contract, the two companies announced last week. GSA annually manages hundreds of millions of dollars in federal construction.

"The rapid adoption of emerging technologies such as the cloud, collaboration software, mobile, and building information modeling (BIM) is transforming construction and infrastructure projects," said Carahsoft VP Patrick Gallagher. "Aconex is helping drive this trend among owners and contractors worldwide, and we look forward to offering our government customers and partners these best-of-breed collaboration solutions for capital projects of all sizes."

Not surprisingly, Aconex is equally enthused. "This agreement gives buyers for federal government construction and infrastructure projects ready access to our portfolio of collaboration solutions through Carahsoft," said Chris Dobbyn, Aconex SVP of corporate development. "With increasing pressure on federal spending and demand for infrastructure, project-wide collaboration for capital projects has become key to delivering value to the U.S. government and to the American people."

Aconex platforms assist project team members in performing feasibility studies, design and other activities in cloud environments, throughout a project's lifecycle. Its client base includes players in infrastructure, power, mining, oil and gas. Meanwhile, as a GSA Schedule Contract holder, Carahsoft also helps agencies to optimize technology in a cost-efficient manner, serving as a conduit between manufacturers and end-users. The two vendors now will collaborate in marketing Aconex solutions via the agency's online shopping portal,

Aconex also announced earlier this week that it has been selected to participate in the US$1.3-billion Regina Bypass project, the largest public-private partnership (P3) ever undertaken in Canada's Saskatchewan Province. The new bypass will route traffic around the province's capital city to improve safety, alleviate traffic in the city and stimulate growth throughout the region.

Regina Bypass Partners, the  joint venture formed to plan, design and build the P3 project, consists of four of the largest contractors operating in Canada: Graham Infrastructure, LP; Parsons Canada, Ltd.; Carmacks Enterprises; and VINCI Construction Terrassement. By using a P3 model, Saskatchewan transportation officials claim they will save taxpayers US$260 million, or more than 16% of the total project value, compared to original project estimates, according to data compiled by Ernst & Young.

Now underway with work being performed round-the-clock, the bypass consists of 60 km of new and upgraded four-lane highways, 12 new overpasses, and 55 km of new service roads. Aiming for a 2019, the P3 partners will operate and maintain the built assets for an additional 30 years.
