High times in Shanghai spur CTBUH expansion

CHICAGO – The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) is extremely pleased to announce that the 18th of March will see the official launch of its new China Office, located at the College of Architecture and Urban Planning (CAUP),  Tongji University, Shanghai. The CTBUH China Office will lead CTBUH initiatives in China and Asia to grow membership and disseminate the latest technical knowledge on tall building development. All China-based members are invited to attend an evening cocktail reception to celebrate the launch of this new office and initiative. 

Started in 2009 and designed by Gensler, the 128-story Shanghai Tower will be the world's third tallest building when it opens later this year. Thornton-Tomasetti is the structural engineer. (Gensler image)

Six of the seven China Office Founding Sponsors are also now confirmed, representing the diverse range of disciplines that comprise the Council’s base, as indicated below: 

• Shanghai Tower (Owner / Developer);
• Ping An Tower (Owner / Developer);
• JLL (representing Agent / Letting / Building Management);
• ECADI (representing Public Sector Architectural / Engineering);
• CCDI (representing Private Sector Architectural / Engineering);
• United Technologies Research Center China (representing Research)

Each Founding Sponsor has nominated one representative to sit on the new nine-member China Office Board. 

 Safarik heads to Shanghai.

In addition, the new China Office Director, Daniel Safarik, has been confirmed and will take up post in Shanghai in March. Trained as an architect, Safarik, who is the current CTBUH Journal Editor, has contributed to numerous CTBUH publications and initiatives, as well as represented CTBUH in various forums. He will assume responsibility for Asia-based initiatives, which include launching Chinese translation of all significant outputs, a China-based awards series, and facilitating research projects across a wide range of disciplines. These will include and result in technical guides and other outputs.
